PracticeMaster and Prolaw
Top Ten Differences Between Prolaw and Practicemaster, by
Ginger Rendon.
Both ProLaw and PracticeMaster offer unique and powerful opportunities to customize fields as well as to incorporate the firm’s workflow and specific processes. Both do take a good amount of time and thought to implement, but the end result can radically change the firm’s financial bottom line - in a good way - for many years beyond the initial “return on investment.” Finally, many PracticeMaster users assemble documents in WordPerfect using our integration with HotDocs.

Word, Word Perfect
Word Processing, by
Andrew C. Simpson.
Word, with its use of “styles,” is excellent at standardizing the look of a document. If your documents need to follow a consistent format, Word is a better choice than WordPerfect.
Corel WordPerfect is the most full-featured of all three programs. It is far easier to use than Word and does not require specialized training.

iConect, ImageDepot, Lextranet, Lexbe
SaaSsy Litigation Support, by
Brett Burney.
With Lexbe users can actually upload their own documents to their databases without having to send them somewhere or have them converted. Lexbe can even OCR-scan PDF documents as they get uploaded. Lexbe can also easily handle electronic documents from Microsoft Word, Corel Wordperfect, Outlook, etc.). Once documents are uploaded into Lexbe, you can tag "key" documents, apply Bates numbering, add notes and even link documents to facts listed elsewhere in the case. Clients access Lexbe through a Web browser, and all traffic is encrypted and protected by Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). Lexbe ensures the confidentiality of the documents you store on their servers, and they also create daily backups of all work done on the system.
ImageDepot focuses a little more on managing electronic documents, as opposed to scanned (or "imaged") paper files. ImageDepot's interface is also very easy to get around and provides simple search functions for documents in the database. ImageDepot keeps an audit log to show you when reviewers do their work and when documents are downloaded or e-mailed from the system.
iConect and Lextranet are definitely viable options for enormous litigation databases at larger firms, but Lexbe and ImageDepot provide the essential tools for smaller, more numerous litigation matters that require a functional database review tool.

HotDocs
Abracadabra: Document Creation You Can Really Use, by
Barron Henley and Blair Janis.
There are several available document automation applications and while each has its own unique way of handling the task, they all are very capable and able to achieve the objectives we discuss below. Each of them works with Word or WordPerfect or both. Some provide the ability to automate PDF forms. Because LexisNexis’ HotDocs continues to dominate the market and both of us are most familiar with it we refer to and show examples from HotDocs throughout this article but we could just as easily be referring to any of these applications.

SmartDraw Legal Edition has an intuitive click-and-drag interface and a look similar to Microsoft Office 2007. The ability to export the final product to Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Corel WordPerfect, PDF and JPEG is as easy as clicking a button. Kim Plonsky.
The Right Click to Knowledge Series extracts key information from hundreds of pages of documents in minutes using Speed Read or Knowledge Map. It also integrates with Corel WordPerfect Office, Microsoft Office and Mindjet MindManager Pro 6. The components can be purchased separately and are priced easily within reach of personal or business users. WordPerfect
Corel WordPerfect Office X3
Standard Edition, by
Kim Plonsky.
The future seems very bright indeed for WordPerfect Office X3, although I am somewhat hesitant to give my wholehearted recommendation at this time, mostly because I experienced regular and predictable program crashes. Overall, compatibility is indeed WordPerfect Office X3’s strong suit specifically its built-in PDF publishing capabilities and interchangeability with Word and other file formats. Combined with its comparatively low cost, this re-establishes WordPerfect as a contender in the word processing and office suite software war.
