iConect, ImageDepot, Lextranet, Lexbe
SaaSsy Litigation Support, by
Brett Burney.
With Lexbe users can actually upload their own documents to their databases without having to send them somewhere or have them converted. Lexbe can even OCR-scan PDF documents as they get uploaded. Lexbe can also easily handle electronic documents from Microsoft Word, Corel Wordperfect, Outlook, etc.). Once documents are uploaded into Lexbe, you can tag "key" documents, apply Bates numbering, add notes and even link documents to facts listed elsewhere in the case. Clients access Lexbe through a Web browser, and all traffic is encrypted and protected by Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). Lexbe ensures the confidentiality of the documents you store on their servers, and they also create daily backups of all work done on the system.
ImageDepot focuses a little more on managing electronic documents, as opposed to scanned (or "imaged") paper files. ImageDepot's interface is also very easy to get around and provides simple search functions for documents in the database. ImageDepot keeps an audit log to show you when reviewers do their work and when documents are downloaded or e-mailed from the system.
iConect and Lextranet are definitely viable options for enormous litigation databases at larger firms, but Lexbe and ImageDepot provide the essential tools for smaller, more numerous litigation matters that require a functional database review tool.

SmartCase
SmartCase, by
Brett Burney.
Because SmartCase is a Web-based service, anyone can work anytime from any location. There is no technical overhead since SmartCase stores data on LMI's secure servers. Uploading documents is easy and there is excellent customization and reporting features. An included word processor might require additional plug-ins for your Web browser; information can't be accessed when the Internet is down; and the system can be slow, depending on your Internet connection. I recommend this for a variety of professionals (sole practitioners, small firms, paralegals, legal nurse consultants) who might not want to pay for storage servers but who still want to easily share information with their clients.
