How Well Does Software Work as a Service?, by
Brett Burney.
Technology waits for no law firm, and the advantages of SaaS-based software are certainly starting to grab the attention of those that are concerned with the bottom line. Recent studies by Gartner and McKinsey & Company declare that SaaS applications are becoming more mainstream than ever, and predict that the SaaS offerings will grow significantly in the next three to five years. It's understandable that many people are leery of the whole notion of having their critical software served up over the Internet, but perhaps those folks just aren't comfortable thinking outside the proverbial box.

SaaSsy Litigation Support, by
Brett Burney.
With Lexbe users can actually upload their own documents to their databases without having to send them somewhere or have them converted. Lexbe can even OCR-scan PDF documents as they get uploaded. Lexbe can also easily handle electronic documents from Microsoft Word, Corel Wordperfect, Outlook, etc.). Once documents are uploaded into Lexbe, you can tag "key" documents, apply Bates numbering, add notes and even link documents to facts listed elsewhere in the case. Clients access Lexbe through a Web browser, and all traffic is encrypted and protected by Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). Lexbe ensures the confidentiality of the documents you store on their servers, and they also create daily backups of all work done on the system.
ImageDepot focuses a little more on managing electronic documents, as opposed to scanned (or "imaged") paper files. ImageDepot's interface is also very easy to get around and provides simple search functions for documents in the database. ImageDepot keeps an audit log to show you when reviewers do their work and when documents are downloaded or e-mailed from the system.
iConect and Lextranet are definitely viable options for enormous litigation databases at larger firms, but Lexbe and ImageDepot provide the essential tools for smaller, more numerous litigation matters that require a functional database review tool.
