TrialDirector
TrialDirector 5.1, by
Brett Burney.
TrialDirector 5.1 features a mature interface, easy-to-find feature set and effortless drag-and-drop functionality. Most users will never need the array of additional features that tend to get in the way. For example, in presentation mode you can add stamps, draw circles and squares, preprogram layers and change the color of the pen tool with graphics tools; however, most users just zoom into a section of text and highlight it in yellow. Another feature that I don't see many people using is the color-coding system for issues in transcripts. TrialDirector 5.1 is one of the best products for litigators and other legal professionals to use for displaying documents and video testimony in a courtroom for official hearing.

SmartDraw
SmartDraw Legal Edition, by
Brett Burney.
SmartDraw Legal Edition has an intuitive click-and-drag interface and a look similar to Microsoft Office 2007. An incredible selection of hundreds of templates allows you to create professional crime scene diagrams, accident reconstruction diagrams, legal flowcharts and timelines, and perform other graphic chores. The ability to export the final product to Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Corel WordPerfect, PDF and JPEG is as easy as clicking a button. I recommend SmartDraw Legal to easily create professional-looking diagrams and graphics that can be used in a variety of applications such as Microsoft Word or PowerPoint.

Dragon
Dragon NaturallySpeaking Legal 9, by
Kim Plonsky.
Offers an abundance of help features, tools and resources with well-done tutorials accessible directly from the Dragon Bar. Common commands are available by simple voice command. Dragon's macro creation tools for dictating and recalling text and graphics, and the ability to phrase commands in a variety of ways, are stellar components that are crucial to achieving optimum accuracy. As with other versions, Dragon NaturallySpeaking Legal 9 includes a high-quality, noise-canceling microphone. I have no hesitation recommending Dragon NaturallySpeaking Legal 9 for legal professionals looking to use technology to its fullest, especially those who dislike typing, those who dictate well and frequently in their practices, and those with physical limitations or disabilities. As far as speech recognition software, Dragon is the de facto standard, representing the best in state-of-the-art dictation software.

Outlook 2007
Exchanging Your Old Outlook for the New, by
Brett Burney.
While Outlook 2007 can certainly stand on its own, many law firms and companies that use Outlook power the backend with a Microsoft Exchange Server. If you're a desktop Outlook user, you've probably hired someone to maintain the Exchange backend, but it's worth noting some of the features you'll enjoy if your office links Outlook 2007 with Exchange Server 2007. New features for those using both Outlook 2007 and Exchange Server 2007 include a Resource Assistant for booking rooms and equipment; a Web-based, offline address book; and support for unified messaging that allows users to receive voicemails and fax messages directly in their Inbox. Like the other applications of Microsoft Office 2007, Outlook is much improved and streamlined. While it may not boast the drastic facelift found in Word or PowerPoint for graphics, Outlook 2007 proves that beauty is more than just skin deep.
