Adobe Acrobat 9
An Even Nimbler Acrobat - Adobe Acrobat 9 Has Special Appeal for Lawyers , by
Stephen Bird.
Overall I like Adobe Acrobat 9... a lot. Many new and enhanced features will benefit lawyers and law firms. It may take some time to become familiar with some of the features; however, while exploring the program for this article it was easy to perform a task like document compare or redaction.

deskPDF Professional
Docudesk's deskPDF Professional: A low-cost alternative to Adobe Acrobat, by
Sandra Rosenzweig.
My favorite of the Acrobat alternatives is still Docudesk's deskPDF Professional (www.docudesk. com). At $29.95 it's one-fifteenth the price of Acrobat Professional ($449) and it does about half of the chores its costlier cousin does. Like Acrobat, deskPDF creates PDFs out of one or more files selected from a directory tree, and it integrates with some Microsoft Office programs and countless other Windows programs-but not Outlook.

Acrobat.com, Buzzword, ConnectNow, Share, MyFiles and Create PDF
Acrobat.com (Beta), by
Kim Plonsky.
Innovative, clean and crisp user interface. Surprisingly fast for an online application. Backup of work occurs behind the scenes every few minutes, and every time a document is saved in Buzzword, the prior version automatically is saved. It’s easy to learn and support is plentiful. There are no spreadsheet or presentation programs. Oddly, Buzzword imports most common file formats, but not PDF. Navigation between Adobe .com’s modules is clumsy, which can lead to repeatedly being requested to sign in. Although still in beta and so too soon to recommend it to legal professionals for business use, I think it’s worth checking out, and I would not be surprised if others, like me, have at least one use in mind for it already.

Acrobat 9
Acrobat 9 Balances New With Tried-and-True, by
Brett Burney.
Adobe has improved the overall performance of Acrobat with version 9, although this will most certainly depend upon the horsepower of the computer you're using. While Acrobat 9 hardly boasts any brand new capabilities, the improvements on the features from Acrobat 8 are worth the price of an upgrade. Acrobat 9 is more efficient and mature, especially on features like Bates stamping, redaction and collaboration.

Adobe Acrobat 9
Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard, by
Elsa Wenzel .
As with Acrobat 8.1, Adobe Acrobat 9 offers myriad features that the average consumer seeking to create a basic, print-ready PDF won't need. The metadata removal, 256-bit encryption, and ease of redactions alone easily could justify the purchase for, say, a law firm. Those who specialize in making presentations with moving images and sounds will find plenty of options at their fingertips, especially given the integration with Adobe Creative Suite 3.3.

Canon DR-2510C
DR-2510C Compact Color Scanner, by
Christel Burris.
Scan quality is outstanding. At 300dpi it’s far and away better than any other scanner I’ve used. The scans at 300dpi are so good that there is no need to scan at a higher resolution. While the “one touch” buttons on the front of the scanner are useful, one of my favorite things about the Xerox DocuMate is I can program a button to
launch Acrobat and immediately start scanning.
While you can program any one of the DR-2510C
buttons to “launch” a program, the only program it
works with on my machine is Microsoft Publisher.

Acrobat 8.1
Acrobat 8.1 Professional for Windows, by
Elsa Wenzel.
Acrobat 8.1 is more useful and intuitive tool than its ancestor. Acrobat 8.1 lets you fill out and collect forms digitally instead of having to print them; intuitive wizards walk you through the features; better manages redactions, metadata and security; integrates with Acrobat Connect to collaborate with other users.

Acrobat 9.0
Acrobat 9.0 - Worth getting for one new feature, by
Ernest Svenson.
I've tried Acrobat 9.0 on both Mac and Windows and I have to say that it's an impressive upgrade. Initially, I was lukewarm about the prospect of upgrading, mostly because 8.0 offered most of what I need as a lawyer (e.g. bates-stamping and redaction). But 9.0 offers one thing that, by itself, makes this a worthwhile upgrade for many lawyers. Definitely, those who use Casemap will want to get the new version.

Acrobat 9
Acrobat 9 May Not Flip You, by
Jason Krause.
For lawyers, the Bates numbering tool has been made more flexible. It is now possible to renumber documents or to continue to use numbers already assigned to a file when they are imported into Acrobat, which wasn’t always possible in past versions. Thanks to a new optical scanning program, Acrobat can process scanned batches of documents more effectively. It also features improved compression technology, so that even documents with video or high-resolution images do not become too big.

Acrobat 8 Does Flips for Attorneys, by
Jason Krause.
The new release has a graphical interface that makes it easier to combine documents into a single file. This is useful for lawyers putting together presentations or court filings. And lawyers will no longer have to use a third party software tool to add Bates numbers. Masters notes the Adobe numbers are not permanent and can be erased. "On the litigation side of things, PDFs are clearly becoming a standard, "says Masters. "It's even see gaining momentum for transactional lawyers. It’s rapidly becoming indispensable."

Casemap
Technology Update, by
Joe Kashi.
Many have been a big fan of Case Soft's CaseMap program for years. It’s one of the best programs around for handling and analyzing facts, individuals and issues, and how they relate to your case. Version 7.5 is the most useful and reliable version so far. Definitely recommended. It works very comfortably with Adobe Acrobat and is particularly useful in paperless law practices.

pdfDocs Desktop 2.1
Review: pdfDocs Desktop 2.1 - An Alternative to Adobe Acrobat Professional, by
John Heckman.
All in all, pdfDocs Desktop by itself can serve as an adequate substitute for Acrobat Professional DocsCorp also provides a trial version so you can test drive the product.
Firms might want to splurge on one or two copies of Acrobat, but rely on pdfDocs Desktop for the rest of the workstations. And if you plan on doing a lot of scanning, the pdfDocs OCR Server is also worth a serious look.

Bluebeam PDF Revu
Review: Bluebeam PDF Revu, by
Caren Schwartz.
Bluebeam PDF Revu, by Bluebeam Software, is a tool to create, view, markup, and edit PDF files. On a scale of 1 to 5, I give Bluebeam PDF Revu a 4.5. I would highly recommend Bluebeam PDF Revu, especially if you use CAD programs or if you don’t need the link to a program like Time Matters. I’m delighted to have it installed on one of my computers and find that, for a number of PDF functions, I switch to that computer rather than use Adobe Acrobat.

Sanction, Trial Director, TimeMap, Visionary
Still Using Version 1. 0? Here's What's New in Trial Presentation Software, by
Timothy Piganelli.
TrialDirector: One of TrialDirector's strongest features is its report generation functionality. Using this tool, one can generate a report of key exhibits with a thumbnail of the exhibit, a bar code for using a bar code reader and just about any description you could want. In general, you can't go wrong with inData's TrialDirector Suite.
TimeMap: TimeMap has the ability to create PDFs of timeline graphs. You don't need to own a full Acrobat license. There's even a "PDF & Email" option right on TimeMap 4's toolbar. When TimeMap 4 creates a PDF, it goes so far as to add a bookmark for each fact, thereby making it easy to navigate to different events in the timeline. For the price, this tool is a no-brainer. If you're still using Version 1.0, you need to look at TimeMap 4.0.

However, if you are a litigator, then an Acrobat-based law practice can also make you more effective at preparing and trying a case.

PRODUCT REVIEW
Adobe Acrobat 8, by
David L. Masters.
The Bates stamping and redaction features alone justify the cost of the upgrade. If you do not have an older version, I still maintain that every law office should have and use Acrobat. I believe the program easily justifies the cost of acquisition.

CaseMap
CaseMap 6, by
Kim Plonsky.
Advanced integration with Adobe Acrobat, the optional CaseMap Bates Stamper and the new e-mail import greatly enhance CaseMap’s utility. It has strong, reliable customer support. Prerecorded, free online webinars on new features are available. None. Although subscription-based pricing is new to CaseMap, it’s a non-issue, as it amounts to nothing more than a commitment for two to three years at a nominal cost increase over the former pricing plan. Based on my experience, both using CaseMap since 2001 and dealing with the company, I join the legion of legal professionals who recommend CaseMap 6 as an indispensable tool for any litigator.

pdfDocs Desktop
pdfDocs Desktop version 1.7, by
Richard C. Belthoff, Jr..
PdfDocs Desktop is unique in its ability to manipulate multiple PDFs at one time. While it doesn’t completely implement all of the PDF standard features (e.g., semitransparent polygons), pdfDocs Desktop is worth considering if you are looking for an Acrobat alternative. The ability to modify multiple PDFs as one file. It easily creates redacted PDFs. The inability to create semitransparent polygons or other shapes. I recommend it as a good Adobe Acrobat alternative.
